Save money, make your own lunch

August 31st, 2010

A quick and easy method of saving money is to make your own lunch.
Buying lunch every day is a quick way to burn through cash with little benefit.

Where I live on a typical lunch you would spend around $15 for food and drink. This works out to be $3,900 per year just on lunch if you work 5 days a week for 52 weeks in a year.

Just by making sandwiches or other food you can heat up it can not only save you money but be more healthy.

This website shows one quick and easy option for home cooked lunches.

http://www.cbfcooking.com/2010/08/healthy-lunch-for-1-18-per-day/

This example works out to be $1.18 per day = $306.80 per year also assuming you work 5 days a week for 52 weeks.
This gives a possible saving of $3,593 per year which is just an amazing amount to instantly have available for savings or investments.

Also another way to save money on your lunch meal is sometimes the drinks on offer at work can get boring.
I don’t drink coffee or tea so I am stuck with water all day at work. Rather than spending $3.80 on a bottle of coke every day, I buy a box or two of cans when they are on sale. Each day I take a can with me.

Just a couple little changes to your thinking in what you spend at work can save you big when added up over a year.

Please comment below if you have any other cost savings at work ideas to share.

Getting a Job

July 7th, 2010

I have been having a number of discussions with people recently about getting jobs.
It seems some people overlook a few basic points that are important when applying.

1. Your cover letter
Make sure it is gramatically correct and there are no spelling mistakes.
Once you have written it, read over it a few times. Try reading it out loud also.
Make sure it makes sense and gets your point across.
Remember this stage is where most applications are cut.
If the employer has to read over a sentance a few times to understand it they are going to throw it out.

Stop using short hand online. Its all well and good to use it between friends when you are at school, but it won’t cut it in the business world.
Its important to get out of the habbit of using it as quickly as possible.

2. CV, Resume
List all the important points. Keep it as concise as possible. Try to keep it to 2 pages or less.
Remember grammar and spelling!

3. Websites
This does not apply for all jobs but it DOES help for some such as Programming and Design.

My website helped me get two jobs as a programmer so far. For my first job, a friend heard through someone else that a company was looking for a programmer. The URL for my website was passed along until finally I was asked to come in for an interview.

Three years later I applied for a job including the URL for my website on my CV.
Lots of people applied, only a few people got an interview. There were apparently people with higher qualifications than I had at the time.

Yet, I got the job. I later found out that my website was one of the things that helped me.

These people with higher qualifications had done a hell of a lot of studying, but they had zero to show for it.
All they had were pieces of paper. Where as I had pieces of paper, previous experience AND a website that showed things I was doing in my own time.
It showed my boss that I had a passion for programming rather than just wanting it as a career for money.

If you have anything at all you can show online, register a proper domain and show your work.
Join up with community projects. Just get out there any do anything you can to show of your skills and show you have a passion for it.

Register a proper domain name, something that sounds professional which could even be just your name.
It doesn’t even have to cost much. Domain registration is about $10 per year through places like www.godaddy.com
You can get cheap hosting packages also. You do not need to go overboard.

DO make sure that the website looks good though. If you are no good with web design and/or development pay someone or try some free templates.
Its not too hard to get Wordpress and install some skins.

4. Email Address
DO NOT use your skankyslut69@hotmail.com email address on your application for a job! You will most likely find an automatic place in the bin using email addresses like this.
IF you have to use a free email address register a new one using your full name or some variation that sounds professional.
Also try to go with gmail if you can. It is often considered more professional than hotmail even though they offer the same service.

If you go down the route of having your own website as mentioned previously, use email address at your domain. yourname@yourdomain.com

5. Interview
Research the company before you go to the interview.
Make a point of showing that you know about the company.

Most interviwers will ask questions like
- Where do you see yourself in X years?
- How much money are you after?
- What makes you think you would be a good person to hire?

KNOW the answer to these questions and similar ones! Even if its ambitious or what ever. Anything is better than umming and arring in an interview.

Dress neat, make yourself presentable, have a shower and make sure you smell ok.

Use a strong handshake. It feels absolutely terrible to shake someones limp sweatty hand.
I always get an awkward feeling when I shake someones limp hand. It feels more like we are holding hands about to make out rather than a firm lets get down to business shake.

During the interview, look at the other person. Don’t wander around the room with your eyes.
Give your full attention, speak confident and direct.
Be open with your answers and don’t bullshit your way through it.

Well these are all my tips for getting a job. Does anyone have any other tips that I have missed?

Finance Magazine Reviews

June 25th, 2010

Walking into the news agent the other day I was presented with a mass of different business and financial magazines. I decided to go with a random selection of 3, one came with a bonus magazine. I guess the marketing on this one worked. But it so was not worth it.

1. Money
This magazine was made popular in the mid 90’s by the Australian TV show of the same name hosted by Paul Clitheroe. I have read this magazine off and on over a number of years. It always seems to lay everything out in an easy to understand way, aimed at the average person rather than a high end investor. One problem with this magazine is that a lot of it is common sense, but sometimes that can also be useful to re-enforce the basic ideas of money management.

2. NETT
NETT magazine is aimed at online businesses. I found the articles in this magazine to be a good read. Again, there is a lot of common sense ideas in it, but there is enough substance to make it worthwhile.

3. Wealth Creator
I don’t know who this magazine was aimed at. It seemed to totally miss me. This magazine seems to have a number of interviews with business owners which some people may find inspiring but they all seemed to have no substance apart from motivational, ‘you can do it too’ value. It also seemed to have more ads than the other magazines.

4. Think and Grow Rich
This was the free magazine that I got with Wealth Creator. I spent a whole 10 minutes flicking through this magazine. It seemed to be just ads and motivational stories with no substance. If you are one for wanting to hear inspiring stories then this is probably one for you. But for me personally it was lucky it was free.

Rain water tank not level

June 16th, 2010

I recently purchased a second hand water tank from a family member. It only took a few weeks before it was full. It was at this stage that I realised that I had not leveled it properly. It had begun leaking from the top and was bulging in the middle from the weight of the water.

Unfortunately I had to empty the whole tank so I can level. It felt like such a waste letting all the water go but it had to be done.

Lesson learned, level the tank properly before connecting it up!

Old washing machine plans, foiled.

June 14th, 2010

I had big plans for the old washing machine that tried to kill me with electricity.

I was going to use the drum for a outdoor fire

(img src http://www.flickr.com/photos/jurvetson/1516313667/)

It turns out though that the whole inside of the washer is made of plastic. It would make a very toxic one use fire pit. I think I will pass.

Second I was looking at using the motor for a generator. This plan is also foiled due to the washing machine having the wrong type of motor.

So it seems that the whole thing is dentin for the dump.

Washing Machine

June 7th, 2010

I got up early ( for a Sunday ) to do some house cleaning and my washing.
1st up to wash was my work shirts as I needed them for the coming week at work.
Everything seemed going normal until the machine started making weird noises.
I opened the lid, something didn’t seem right. I rearranged the clothes and shut the lid.
The noises were even worse now. But the machine got off balance and stopped.
I re-arranged the clothes again and shut the lid.
A few seconds after shutting the lid there was a loud bang, then smoke started pouring out of the machine.
Luckily we have a Safety switch that tripped the instant the machine died.
I turned off the machine at the power point then turned the safety switch back on, but it would not click in.
It turns out that I couldn’t turn the safety switch back on until the machine was unplugged from the wall even though it was turned off.
The machine had died in a very bad way.
Eventually the house was filled with this smoke that gave me a headache and made me feel nauseous.  It took about 30mins with the front and back door open with the ducted air-conditioner blowing on full to clear it all out.
I wonder what would have happened to me also if there was no safety switch. I was holding the sides of the machine when it blew.
$100 switch may have saved me from getting zapped or a fire.
I have always been a strong believer in the safety switches and this re-enforces it.
I strongly urge anyone who does not have a safety switch to get one installed.
As for the washer, it is no more. I have ordered a new machine (LG WD11020D).
The old one did its job, it is about 15 years old. A freebie from my parents after I moved out of home.
I knew I would have to be replacing it soon as it has been leaking and its noisy, but I can’t complain.
It did the job for me for 1 1/2 years.

Busy Weekend – Reno Update

April 12th, 2010

This weekend was a busy one but it feels like I am on the home stretch.

The clothesline area at the end of the carport now has its soil, the pipe for the dripper system, and a few seeds to get things going.

My Saturday morning started with laying out the garden edging. After much debating and cost investigations, I ended up going with a 10 meter roll of plastic garden edging from Bunnings. It was $26 for a 10 meter roll and I needed 6 stakes at $2 each.

The soil arrived late but with my girlfriend helping it only took about 2 hours to shovel the 3 tones into the garden.
I did have some friends lined up to help out, by the time they arrived there was only movies and drinking left. I should have got them to come earlier but I thought it was going to take me a lot longer. I wanted to make sure I had done the bulk of the work by the time they arrived as it is my garden. I will get them there earlier next time for the quarry rubble and quarry sand though if the offer is still there for help :D

The area has gone through a major transformation already

Before any work

After cement removal in preparation for the storm water drain installation

Garden bed in

You can see at the bottom left corner a small black pipe which is the start of the dripper system. It was $3 for a 10meter roll which was more than enough. The fittings is where they get you with money though so watch out for this.

I still need to cement the area in front of the garden and lawn, get quarry rubble, quarry sand and the fake lawn.
There is also a fair bit of guttering to repair and I need to connect up the rain water tank, but that is for another weekend.

I have planted a few of my seeds in a smaller planter box so they can be transferred into the garden when they are big enough.
For some reason only the Anise and Jalapeno seeds have sprouted. I am not sure what is wrong with the Habenero and Woormwood seeds.

Lastly, I have done a bit more work on the bathroom. One shelf and the clock is installed. They were a simple and cheap additon to the room which has really added to the high ceilings.

The clock was $20 from Ikea.
The shelf was about $20 from shelvingshop.com.au
I have also purchased pots and plants ready for the other shelves in the bathroom. I think I will need a few more but these will be a good start. I don’t know how well they will go in a bathroom but they should look good until they die :)

The pots were $3 each from Bunnings. The two plants on the left were $8 each I have no idea what they are but they are indoor plants. The two on the right are of course Cacti, they were about $5 each also from Bunnings.

A very talkative post about my time in Melbourne

March 7th, 2010
Thursday 4th March started early for my girlfriend and I. We had to be up at 5 am for an early flight. I have the problem when I know I have to be up early, that I constantly wake up every few hours thinking its time to be up. So I was incredibly tired.
We caught a cab at 5:30 am and arrived at the airport in time for our flight. The airport was a lot more busy than I had seen other times but luckily we only needed to do a bag drop rather than check in.
It was the 2nd VirginBlue flight of the morning ( 7:05am ) and it was already running late. It ended up only being 15mins late and they gave us free Foxtel during the flight for the inconvenience.
The cab ride from Melbourne Airport to Melbourne CBD was insanely expensive. I think the cab driver screwed me over.
The meter said $53.00. I went to pay for that, but then he said no its $63.00 including the toll road fees.
I said fair enough and handed him two $50 notes. He said he didn’t have change. I said just round it to even notes then. He said that I had to pay by card. So I said fine. He swiped my card on one box, then put it down, then swiped my card on another box which seemed dodgie.
He handed the POS system to me where it was waiting for my pin. I put it in and asked for a receipt.
He was reluctant to give me a receipt but he finally gave me one. It said $73.00. I asked why its more he said for the tolls. So suddenly its gone up from $53 on the meter, to$63 with tolls, then to $73 with what ever else. I gave up arguing with him and got out as I had already been sitting there for about 10 minutes with hotel staff holding the door open for me.
Interestingly enough the cab ride back to the airport was only about $55 including tolls.
But anyway the hotel was insanely fancy. We stayed at the Hyatt Grand overlooking Federation Square.
We had access to the Grand Club Lounge. This was really nice with awesome views over the city.
I was in Melbourne to setup a ticketing system for an event on Friday night so I had Thurs and Friday morning to do touristy things.
My girlfriend had never been to Melbourne before so I tried to fit in as much as possible.
The first place I took her to was the Bourke Street Mall. Its a nice mall, but I feel that it does not have the same atmosphere as other open air malls around Australia, Rundle Mall in particular.
I think it could be because of the tram tracks in the middle, which in other malls would have stalls there instead. Also it seems to split the mall in two.
But, it gets the job done. Lots of up market shops.
On Thursday night we wanted to just get something cheap but good for tea like a Schnitzel. Another thing I find about Melbourne is that you have to know where anything is to find it. Adelaide has cafe’s and clubs in plain view for everyone to see. Where as Melbourne they are all hidden down little side streets.
I went to find an ATM one day, I found an ANZ bank, walked around a narrow alley way for the ATM and found lots of cafes.
For tea we ended up going to a place recommended by the hotel staff, Mrs Parma’s ( http://www.mrsparmas.com.au/ ). The meal was good and not bad for Melbourne prices. The number one thing I have to say though is finally a place that DOESN’T put the schnitzel on top of the chips!!
The schnitzel takes up the entire plate, then they bring out two separate bowls with chips and salad.
Restaurant owners, take notice!
We also visited Federation square and the Melbourne casino.
The best thing was the Eureka tower. Rialto observation deck is now closed, I hear they are turning it into a restaurant. But now I have seen both I think Eureka is better.
We went with a Day and Night pass. $4 extra to get two trips in one day.
There wasn’t enough time to travel out anywhere to far so we kept within walking distance of the hotel for everything which kept us busy anyway.
Friday night my work project went well which helped me sleep a bit better :D
Saturday we had a lazy day around the hotel before we headed to the airport. It was nice, sunny, warm, bit humid, on the drive to the airport. We checked in at 2pm and got some food.
While we were eating the sky started getting dark. By the time we finished eating the rain had started and the airport had started leaking. One place was actually like a waterfall. I had never seen so much water running inside of a building.
We made our way to our gate waiting for our 4pm flight. As we were waiting airport sirens were sounding. An announcement said sirens mean that there is lightning within 8kms of the airport so all airport ground staff are required to stay indoors. This grounded all flights leaving.
About 30mins later flights started getting cancelled. Planes that were supposed to come into Melbourne were being diverted to Canberra and Sydney, which ment that those planes would not be available to take people from Melbourne to other destinations.
Then it was our call, flight was cancelled.
I let my boss know and he got onto the phone to Virgin. I don’t know how he did it, but he managed to get us onto the last flight of the day, but there was still an 80% chance this flight would be cancelled also.
A guy I know just happened to be on the same flight as me, he called Virgin after, the earliest he could get was 4pm the next day.
7:55pm came and our flight was delayed but only by 5 minutes. We boarded and took off 15mins late.
Flight out from Melbourne was actually pretty smooth. I was expecting it to be crazy bumpy.
The guy that was on the same cancelled flight as me had a cousin that was on a flight that boarded just as the storm hit. They boarded, but were not able to take off for about 2 hours. There was a short break in the storm when two planes took off, his and another. Apparently it was the scariest thing he had ever done in his life. It was so bumpy, up and down all over the place. After hearing this I was expecting the worst.  Lucky for me though it was fine :)
After we arrived we had to make it home to pick up tickets for a Fringe event, then to the fringe event. We arrived to the Fringe event 10minutes late. Couldn’t have timed it better though, as the event started 10minutes late :D
We then got home at about 1:30am and crashed out.

Bathroom Update

February 23rd, 2010

Its been a long time since my last post about the bathroom and it seems like not much has happened. I have been busy on other areas of the house.

The bathroom kinda got to a stage where it was usable so I moved onto different areas which were more important.

Since the last post all the wall painting has been completed. It looks finished now.

The pebbles have been sealed. I used a penetrating sealer which makes the pebbles and grout look dark and wet all the time. It was $110 for 400ml bottle which is insane BUT it has made it look perfect. Also because its a sealer it helps keep the moisture out of the pebbles.

All that is left to do is to

- Paint the bath. I will be using White Night
- Put up some floating shelves
- Paint the door frame and window frame
- Get the shower screen installed. For the shower screen I am actually going with a single pane of glass. There will be no door!

The whole process is taking much longer than I ever expected but the end result is worth it.
